At last a Queensland guess who

Postby David Lahey » Tue Feb 12, 2008 6:56 pm

OK this should be easy for people who rode trials in the Brisbane area in the 1970s. Year is 1976 or 1977. Black and white because we did our own photo printing and colour was a bit too high-tech. Colourful character though.
Is that enough clues yet?

OK, maybe knowing who the rider is on the Sherpa T is a big ask being so long ago.

How about who is the rider standing on the bank wearing a Bell trials helmet? (at the time he seemed to be the only rider around who wore a trials helmet).
Nowadays he rides a Scorpa SY250.
Back then he was about 17 or 18 and lived at a timber mill at Peachester- sorry not Peachester - it's Bellthorpe.

David, Im sure its the 1976 Australian junior champ Craig Gillies.
Give a bit more of a clue on the Sherpa rider, bit before my time.

Sorry not Craig Gillies. Craig is about 3 years younger than the Bell helmet person in the photo. Good try though.

The person on the Sherpa T was the founding President of the Northern Districts Motorcycle Trials Club as it was called back then. He was in the Army at the time and had a 325 Sherpa T sidecar outfit which we used to cart the pegs around when setting sections.

The Bell helmet guy is wearing a dark blue cotton work shirt with the sleeves cut off which was his usual trials attire back then.
I mentioned that because 32 years later he still wears a dark blue cotton work shirt to trials.
