2008 Womans Cup Report

Postby Steve Holzhauser » Thu May 29, 2008 11:55 pm

Hello there Bev.

The Trial was a great tribute to Howard and the high regard his many friends hold for him.

Thanks for your very informative round up of the Sherco womans Cup.
It really was refreshing to have seen some of the rides of the girls and ladies throughout the days event. The amount of envolvement that you have had in the Trials scene for as long back as I care to remember, has without doubt, been a beacon for other ladies to aspire too.

Your disappointment Im sure will be shared by many, when they read of your application being overlooked as the Australian Ladies Team Manager.
One wonders how some of these decisions are made.
Your committment and dedication to promoting our sport and the many other attributes you mention in your post leave me wondering how you could have been overlooked as well.
Hopefully the team will perform well, and in that, you will gain some comfort.
Keep up the good work, always remember, good things come to good people.

Excellent Report as always, Bev.

I was unaware that you had expressed interest in the Women's TDN manager's role. I must admit, I am scratching my head to understand how your contributions, and experience, could be overlooked, or not acknowledged. .......
Maybe there isn't a category for "Quiet Achievers" :?

Much admiration and regards

I have to say I’m either lost for words or I‘m about to spit the dummy.
But I’m not fully aware of the background politics so I’ll have to button my lip for the moment. :-#

Bev O:) ....god knows where this Trials family (and indeed the women’s Trials community) would be without your encouragement and support. I have no doubt that Nikki would have been a non-starter, at Nimmatibel, if it was not for your expert care.....we just can’t thank you enough for that.

I don’t doubt the capabilities of others, but I think a big mistake has been made here.
I know you’ve been working hard on this for as long as I’ve been in Trials. So there’s no doubt in my families mind that you should be the Ladies Team Manager today.

And for the sake of all that know you....please DON’T resign from Trials. [-o< You will be greatly missed and many women will suffer as a result. :(

And for your own sake .....you love the sport \:D/ ....so don’t let anyone or anything take that from you. :thumb:

Best of balance.

As my surname indicates I am Bev' brother. Bev and I both share the passion of riding trials. We started riding trials in 1975. Because of our shared trials addiction we would practice before work each day [frosty mornings included] to fast track our riding skills. 32 years later our shared passion & addiction is just as strong.
But what I have witnessed in Bev's achievements in our sport is nothing short of amazing. Back in the days before managers and coaches she competed & finished the Scotish 6 Day Trial on 2 seperate occasions, and competed in the US Nationals. On these trips she secured sponsorship and organised all travelling accomodation etc.on her own. She has also backpacked extensively through Europe & Asia.
Over many years I have seen the amount of work organisation, effort and passion that Bev has devoted to promoting woman trials in Australia.
I feel that because of the experience accumulated by Bev over the last 32 years in trials plus the fact that she is also a qualified sports nurse with extensive knowledge in sport nutrition, physiology & pyschology,I cannot believe that Bev could be overlooked as the manager for the womans trials team.

My dear friends Steve, Maree, Claudio, Mike, Tarp, Angela & my dear brother Bazza,

Thank you all so much for your kind words of support & encouragement. You have warmed my heart & soothed my soul as I have been feeling rather despondent of late.
I agonized long & hard over whether to submit the last paragraph of my Cup report. Especially after being cautioned, in good faith, not to; for fear of ‘a caning from the rest of the trials population.’ You have restored my faith.
I usually am able to turn the other cheek but this time was an exception, I just felt I really had so much to offer the Women’s TDN Team. I wanted so much to put the time & effort in to make a real difference to their opportunity & experience, but I feel this was unfairly denied me.
Reality is, the Team will be over in Europe for 3 weeks, Brooke although mature for her age, is still very young & will require special support. In most sports if there are female minors, it is mandatory for the manager to be a female, for good reason.
During this time the Team will need someone to coordinate shopping/cooking/laundry/ travel/schedules/ responsibilities/conditioning/recovery/mental health/practice/1st Aid/massage/ supplies of medical, mechanical items/deal with officials in a different languages/resolve hitches in entries, regulations & the like. The list is endless for the many situation that pop up when you are travelling as a team, & competing internationally. All so the girls don't have to be concerned with it & can just concentrate on riding to their best ability. Again, I know the difference between doing it all yourself & having someone to manage this. However, I have also experienced where managers have lacked sufficient skills & not really fulfilled the position's responsibilities. As well as not being impartial nor recognising everyone's special needs. I just felt like I have extensive knowledge & experience in these areas that would benefit the whole Team.
I prepare athletes for Worlds Champs, Commonwealth & Olympic Games all the time at work. I have access to the AIS Sports Medicine/Science services, I know if we had issues of this nature I could receive the best advice. I have access to resources, not available to the public, like ‘Cooking for Champions’ a guide to healthy cooking for Teams for performance & recovery. I have managed & coached sporting teams, in a variety of disciplines, from Junior to 1st grade to State level. I have been a top level athlete, in a variety of disciples, at National & World level, I know the pressures & issues.
Trials at the top level can be dangerous & accidents do happen. I lecture at Sports Medicine Australia & the AIS on wound management for athletes. I educate athletes, Sports Trainers, Soft Tissue Therapists, Physiotherapists & Doctors. I own my own Sports Medical Supplies business, I know all the latest products, I pack Medical Kits for AIS/National Teams all the time. I have been the Sports Nurse for many AIS MX/Enduro/Trials Camps, as well as for hockey, cycling & mountain biking.
I am raving now & I could go on, but it is just to make a point that I feel I had so much to offer & that this was ignored by the selectors. The only explanation I received, after waiting for over 2 weeks, was:
“The successful applicant, however, had made a significant contribution to raising the standard of the women’s confidence and riding abilities, through coaching and training in the period leading up to the eventual funding approval by MA for the 2008 Women’s TdN team.”
I agree this has happened & it is fantastic but this explanation did nothing to help me understand & resolve my confusion over the position of Manager.
I do now firmly believe that there should be some changes to the process of selecting a Manager.
1) There should be an independent selector on the Selection Committee.
2) That MA should review the selection process. That is, they should actually read the applications, review the reasons for selection or non-selection, question any discrepancies before blinding accepting the outcome. Thereby ensuring the process is transparent.
And finally, 3) there should be an avenue for appeals. Therefore, hopefully avoiding this kind of situation from happening again.

Having said all that I wish the team every success & I have no hard feelings towards them. You are right Steve, I gain lots of comfort in the fact that I know I have contributed in some way to this year’s & future Women’s Trials des Nations Teams.

Anyhow, I have had the opportunity to have my say & received some wonderful support & reassurance. So, I feel I can now move on & put my energies into other directions.
Yours in trials (& tribulations),
Bev

Bev,
When the Women's TDN Team was announced, I was sure you had the Manager's job. But now reading the responses from the others and your own, I realise you missed out. The MA have alot to answer for. i don't think there is anyone else who has the experience, both Professional and as a rider that can match yours.

Thanks Bev, great to know that we have your support :D

I feel very comfortable knowing that Toby can call on your experience if we need any assistance. And am very confident in his ability to manage the team (it must run in the family) I have spent alot of time lately training with Toby and have found his bike knowledge and patients invaluable.

It is an honour to be on the team. We are all training very hard at the moment and work really well together as a team.
