TY 175 timing other than stock

Any experience using timing other than .070 inch before top dead center?

Recently bought a parts bike and got it to run. It seemed to run really strong despite having a piston that looks like a handful of sand went through it so I thought I would check the timing. I prefer to make my own timing marks using a dial indicator and then use a timing light. The light indicated that it fires about 3/4 of an inch (19MM) of outside flywheel rotation before the .070 mark. Are they stronger with advanced timing?

Why a 'parts bike' ? (Seems sad to break that up).
Looks like a good candidate for refurbishment or restoration to me.

I've yet to learn of any manufacturer's ignition advance settings being improved on for normal use. (Although I bet the placebo effect operates sometimes!)
It seems to be popular belief that more advance = more power. The opposite is the case, -it's about the efficiency/speed of the 'flame front', if the combustion chamber can be reworked so that the flame front develops faster, then the ignition can be retarded a little to good effect. (I'm sure there are engineers here who could confirm).

I was trying to decide parts or runner, just too much for runner and I have two good runners now but one has some wear and this one has the good parts I need. This one needs tires, bars, levers, throttle, fork tubes, shocks, chain and sprockets, engine rebuild, rear hub, fuel tank derusted, petcock, fenders and seat plus lots of love so parts it is.

I have both riders set to spec and was wondering if other timing was any better without doing it myself.

standard spark timing is the go for a standard engine on standard fuel
more advanced makes it feel flat at low RPM
more retarded makes it feel flat everywhere


relax, nothing is under control

Thanks David, thanks Jools, manufactures spec it is.

Jools you gave me the nudge I needed to make a runner, it didn't take much as I'm with you on making more of these runners. Put the engine back together as it is and will sand the rust off the forks and put in new seals and bars....just enough to make it ride OK. The pile of parts I got with this is enough for the other bikes I have.

That's good to hear mate. When I got mine it was pretty rough and not as complete as yours.
I fettled it thoroughly, and spent only what was absolutely necessary. She looks quite presentable and is a really nice thing to ride. Well worth it, - just took plenty elbow grease and a couple of hundred bucks.
