As a prepubescent teen with a fascination for dirt bikes in the early 1970s, I was stopped dead in my tracks by the classic photograph of Mick Andrews riding over a fallen log amongst the dappled afternoon shadows.

Within maybe 2 months I stood proudly astride my first bike, an unblemished TY250A. Its unblemished state was not to last.

A decade later, life moved on and I recall parking the Ute outside the bedroom window in order that I disgorge the detritus of my life to enter adulthood.

Included in the mountain of detritus bound for the bonfire was perhaps 200kgs of 1970s bike magazines including issue 2 of an Australian magazine called "THE BIKE BOOK". It featured the aforementioned photograph of Mick Andrews on the cover. Totally responsible for my ongoing enjoyment of trials today!

If I really wanted to, I could buy that magazine on EBay today for $50. Perhaps not.

Alastair, it seems you are on to my motivation as I had kept a Trail and Track magazine from my youth that had a 4 way comparison of Japanese 250s and I have looked and looked on multiple ocasions and I still don't know where it Is! All these years on and having owned, worked on and competed on all 4 models makes me even more curious! So hopefully we can build an electronic library with an existing forum search facility so we can find articles in the Future?

Knowing it is early stages yet, BUT, IF we judged THE BEST on magazine articles alone using most praised and least criticized, we have a clear winner in the HUMBLE Bultaco M49 :!:

Here is another magazine from my collection:

Thanks Greg, that TL125 test was well-reasoned and well-written.
I especially liked "Two things immediately impress about the motor. They are its lack of temperament, and its lack of power"
