Hi Everyone,

Rod wrote:Those mags from back in the day were hopeless with their photography and reports. That only colour shot of the 247 is front on, which gave no idea to the buying public what it actually looked like in the the flesh. I would have been unimpressed if I was the Oz importer of Montesa back then. Anyhow that's how it was back then, does anyone have any magazine articles on the '74 Cota 247(black frame) or '75 Ulf Karlson replica 247 that they could post up please regardless of how good or bad the report is. Cheers.

Rod, I find it quite amusing how bad they were, at least by 1979 the cameraman had learnt by others Mistakes! That is when you tilt the camera to try and fool the readers about the degree of difficulty. You need to make sure there are no tell tales of vertical like trees and buildings in the Background!
This is not exactly what you are asking for but might keep our friends in :SA: Happy?

Excellent David, so we can finally end the age old debate between :montesa and :Bultaco:___________ :D :D :D

I found that ADB test and will have a go at getting our home scanner to work. If not, I might have to wait till I can scan it at work. If someone has a colour version of the test please post it up here because mine is monochrome, and the photography in ADB is usually quite good.

As far as settling which is better :montesa or :Bultaco: , it is a very interesting read. It was written by Geoff Eldridge (editor of ADB magazine at the time) and is a great example of his style which I loved so much as a youngster (the brutal facts explained carefully and clearly) and was sure to have irritated some bike importers back then. Another thing I like so much about Geoff's trials bike tests is that while he rarely swung a leg over a trials bike, he was able to incorporate the feedback of top trials riders seamlessly with his own experience of the bike in question.

ADB test 250 Bultaco Sherpa t and Montesa Cota 247

Postby David Lahey » Sun Mar 12, 2017 12:47 pm

I'm thinking this might have been published in 1976, judging by the model of the Sherpa T and the ad for the Cota 348 saying that "1977 will be the year of the Cota 348"

Indeed it was the year of the 'Cota 348' with Jeff Gough winning the 1977 Australian Championship mounted on one.

I'm sensing a "gut wrenching chunder" from Graham when he reads that report.

Strange how they never mentioned anything about the relatively poor ground clearance of the Cota, that was one of the main talking points amongst the riders back in the day when comparing the pros and cons of each of the Spanish brands plus the Jap bikes.
The more ground clearance the better.

Ha ha Rod. I first read this article back when it came out in 1976 and laughed at them then. QLD trials seemed to be a bit more European in nature with more open sections. The rest of Australia followed suit very soon after. I know Ross won on a M199 in 1978 in the Australian Championships as I have seen the ads. I can remember looking at each of these bikes in Brisbane and liking the Sherpa a hell of a lot more. My cousin bought a M158 in about 1977 or so. All I can say is :Bultaco: :Bultaco: :Bultaco: . Graham.

Yes I agree, the Bultaco was always more appealing even though the bus stop I disembarked from each day from school was at Bob Morgan's Yamaha/Montesa Holland Park shop. My Dad actually bought me a new Sherpa T 250 from Norm Fraser's in 1975 I think it was, I was devastated when he brought it home because it wasn't the slim line model like I'd seen a few weeks previously at Biddaddaba ridden to good effect by people like Jeff Gough , Jeff Rook and David Goldsmith. I loved that Bully and quickly adapted to the arse about face gear lever/brake pedal having come off a TY 175. Stupidly after only about 8 months I pressured my Dad to trade it in to Phil Thew Moto for a new RM 125 B because Moto-X was cool and Trials wasn't. I was only 13 or 14 at the time (40 years ago), silly me as moto-x was full of injuries and apparent that this was not for me. Trials was always my love and still is a wonderful past time. Just on the back end to this,
I'd love to find an original(not restored) 150/151 and/or 190/191 if any exist out there for non ridiculous prices.

Rod you sound like me except my hankering is not for 1976 Sherpa Ts. Around 1975, I had a registered M99 (first model 325cc) Alpina and found it was a very nice thing for trail riding but my high school friends were into trials and the local trials ace (Jeff Gough) was fairly influential to watch practicing trials at the local dirt bike gathering places. I rode some trials on the Alpina but it was a bit of a beast and I hankered for a TY, so I sold the Alpina :( and bought a second hand TY175. For the last 25 years I have been wanting an Alpina like my old one and even spent 15 years and way too much $$$ building up a 360cc M138 Alpina that is a blast to ride, but it isn't the same as the early model Alpinas to ride or to look at. Now I'm old and soft I still want the earliest model Alpina, but now I want it to be a 250 (M85). I've been buying and will have something to show later in 2017

Wow! I have not read that story since that magazine came out in 1984. Well done Rod. I really liked reading it again. Graham. 8)
