I think the larger muffler was for registerable versions.

Model was a JC - may have even had indicators and battery?
Could be the start of the dumb ADR which stops us from having the same bike as the overseas market.

The muffler in the photo is from a TY175JC and it is chunkier to meet the ADRs for noise. They work very well for noise output. The TY175JC model has an ADR compliance plate.
The other models of TY175s sold in Australia (mostly C and B models) came with the cylindrical raspy-sounding muffler.
I've heard that the TY175JC muffler improves bottom end power when fitted to the TY250B,C,D,E models compared with their standard muffler. The JC muffler is heavier though.

Just a question for the TY experts.

Did Yamaha resort to a different rear muffler assembly for the "C"s ?
they look a bit chunkier than the earlier models

Hi there 888 Marks ty looks like a jc as it has the blinker & battery mounts on the frame ,was needed for the a,d,rs at the time also the rare je had this as well,Ive had a j,jc,je models and have still got a b model ,,the jc&je were much smoother with power delivery than the b,& j models but cant remember iff any was more power than the other just put it out different To me the je was the best one of all but i did get that one as a new bike always makes a difference!!!!!!!!still a great bike all these years latter

Thanks for that Tim very helpful.

So please tell me how do you tell all of the models appart ?

my bike has an ADR tag having being built on the 2/77

the frame number is 1N4-001002

can you tell what model it is from that ?

The 1N4 ID prefix is unique to the TY175JC model
That bike in the photo is also easily identified because of the extra frame brackets behind the seat on the rear frame loop, on the rear frame upright and the absence of a side stand on the right hand arm of the swingarm. The TY175JC has a stand on the left side and the mount for it is on the footpeg bracket.
If you could see the front wheel better, you could also tell it is a TY175JC by the wide front rim (compared with the rim fitted to the competition models).
The ADR plate is another give-away.
If it had the standard lighting and speedo, you would see huge blinkers and tail-light, and equally huge support bracket inside the rear guard. A battery in a steel box would be hanging off the frame too. The speedo would be mounted up near the bars and there aould be a key type ignition switch under the fuel tank on the LH side.
The airbox would have a rubber snorkel on the inlet and the carby would have jetting different to the competition models.
There would also be long rubber fin dampers between the barrel and head fins.
Thats all I can think of for now without having a look at one.
My sister still has an unmolested one of them with the (christmas tree) lighting. I think she used to ride to work on it for a while in the 1970s.
Yes they came out in 1977 in Australia and are often confused with the 1976 TY175C because of the colour scheme they both share.

I couldn't resist having a look in the shed. The TY175JC also has a security lock on the left side of the steering head.

Thanks David

so these models were destined for the road rather than competition ?

Are they easily adapted for competion ?

They are fine for competition. Some people even reckon the motor is nicer to use than the comp models. The only drawbacks compared with the competition model TY175s is that the stand doesn't move up and down with the swingarm, so tends to get whacked on rocks and logs and if you fit Sammy Miller footpegs - no side stand.

Hi there luksta888 that was me that posted that note to you didnt see i was on tims page!!!!!!!!!!!!!David is very informative on this and i cant think of anything else to tell you about them ,after owning nearly all of these models i never noticed the wide front rim on the jc or je......The je was the same paint format as the 250e pictured before but was red not blue and by the way i thought it was much better to ride than any of the others,,Great memories of Craig gillies beating all commers at the cootamundra 3 day trial on day one with one of them and everyone was asking what have you done to that? no one would believe it was standard and it was,,,,,Paice won overall, I also rode the je in some a grade trials when my monty was sick and it realy surprised me how well it went !!!!!and also many other a grade riders as well,,,,,,,,,my bigest regret is selling it!!!!!!!!!
