but wait, there's more...
Here's what I was faced with when I cracked open the 'box.
after much of this...
all the bits scrubbed up pretty well. There's no pitting on the teeth of any of the gears, just a bit of discolouration. Hopefully they'll be OK. All the gearbox bits were thoroughly cleaned, then oiled and packed in to zip lock bags and are now residing in teh big white box.
State of the nation...
So, it's getting there. Waiting on the engine cases etc. to come back from blasting. Then I'll look at getting the frame a bit straighter. I wasn't going to bother, but it's pretty bent on the lhs under the engine. Then strip and paint the frame (not going to powder coat it now, as I can't powder coat. I can paint, however, and POR 15 looks like a pretty good option.) Fork legs will go to RAD and I'll re-assemble the donk. Yet to procure some rear shocks, fork springs clutch bits and various other do-dads. Wheels can wait, for now. I'll do the bearings but polishing the hubs and new s/steel spokes can be done next year. I want to ride this thing again!

Hey. Hey.
The innards do look messy on those photos. Someone must have been using mud as lubricant.
That's a fair project.

Is it time to ride yet?

The resto has begun:
The start.
Making sure the new bits fit.
Heat guns are great for molding plastic bits.
All fits.
Next for paint.

Hi
Im still around, still have some hub/sprocket adaptors,
These are CNC machined High Tensile Aluminium
Depending on your shocks you may have to add about a 4mm spacer behind the lower eye due to the wider 520 chain
$79 + Post ($6 in a post bag)
Im on the Gold Coast if anyone wants pick up

Hi Russ,
I got a call from my shop man today. he may have found a solution to my problem.
I will see what he has come up with, and if its a no-go, I will be in touch.
Could be a good reason to get the Boxer Cup out for a run down the Gold coast on the weekend!!

Hi Andrew,
You can always get a blank flat sprocket machined and drilled to suit with a spacer behind, only problem with that is every time you change a sprocket you have to do it all again, and not to mention "the look" of course?

Hi Russ,
I have the spacer on my bike with buggered 428 chain and sprockets(15/53).
My shop man has tracked down 520 sprockets(12/46) from a GPZ500 or something like that, they are virtually the same fit as the KT so it should do okay.
Thanks for the info about your adaptor, I may still get one from you depending on how this other setup goes.

Time for an update on the KT resto.
I had not touched it since February and have got stuck in over the last couple of weeks. CD8 is coming fast and I want to take the KT up there with the SWM(and others).
Top-end had been rebuilt by the previous owner( 2nd oversize rebore etc) but he didn't do crankcase seals, they are now done along with a bucket load of elbow grease to remove 35 years of built up grime from all the alloy, including the hubs which where stained brown!!
I sorted my rear sprocket issue and i am very happy about the outcome.
About every bearing or seal on the bike has been replaced, new tyres, tubes, guards, lever assemblies , rear shocks, there is nothing that has not received attention in some way.
i am now waiting for the top end gaskets to arrive so the engine can go back together, carb rebuild kit to go in, exhaust is getting 'caustic soda service #2' at the moment, then will be stripped and repainted, then the tank and sidecovers will get a tidy up and a new coat of paint and decals should finish him off.
Latest pics:
All the lights etc have gone into a box for future restoration. I will be riding this one so it wont need that stuff on it to get broken.
