How much did your twinshock cost?

Postby manxman » Wed Jul 18, 2012 9:42 pm

My day job is writing finance stories for an Australian wire service, and I am researching a piece on long term investments at the moment. There is a 1972 348 Cota on ebay for $5000, in comparison three bottles of 1971 Grange Hermitage, are currently worth $4500. If you bought a twinshock in the sixties, seventies or early eighties, can you remember what you paid for it? On the other hand, did you buy a bottle of wine in the seventies or eighties?

Hi Peter, I started riding Trials in 1973 and it was some years after that before Montesa Cota 348s made an appearance, so I'd say the eBay salesman doesn't have his facts right. My first bike was a TY250A, literally as soon as they were released in Australia, and I paid Doug Bryant Motorcycles $753 for it.

Don't know if this helps. I paid $750 for an RL250 Suzuki in 1976 in the USA. Seems that I recall that the retail price was around $1100. We had a dealer in our club that was getting them from other dealers that couldn't sell them due to customers didn't know what a trials bike was used for so he could sell them cheap.
At the time $.90 US would buy $1.00 Canadian and lately Canadian & AU run about the same exchange with US so I suppose they may have in 1976 as well.

Bought my good running but beat up current RL about 5 years ago for $950.

Drank the wine!

David,Has the vino collapso been getting to you - it has to me this evening...
Back to thread.
1968/9 247Mk1 Cota in poor condition but complete, bought for £70 about 4 years ago.1970 ish one with a picture posted on show us your twinshock thread - £350 about 2 months ago.
I paid £1525 ofr a brand new TLR250 in 1986,chopped in for a 241 Fantic mono in 87.
In 1990 I paid £1500 for an RTL 250 Honda in very average condition.(Didnt like it much, blocked up with mud too easily and the carb was probably worn out,but wish I'd kept it)
Paid £1200 in 2006 for 2 x 1978 ty250's,probably plenty at the time, but I have MORE than had my moneys worth from them.
Recently paid £3800 for a 98% sorted 350 AJS rigid - worth EVERY penny,its brilliant !
Favourite childhood memory - seeing 5 brand new Honda TL125 Honda's outside a dealers shop in Machnylleth,North Wales - £329 each. I so wanted one, couldnt understand my parents lack of interest....
But they are all just numbers, fact is I've enjoyed all of them - thats all I'm interested in.

I think the Ty 175 is the best investment, I got one for about $500 back then, but for now the 4liter wine cask might be a good investment as apparently they might not be around for long :x . But from all the bikes the CZ mx 75 models were selling for about $600 back then and Suzuki RN and RH 74 models were going for $900 with full spares kit, when the RM models were released.
