Great Youtube Vids for Newbies

Postby Dr Peter » Wed Jan 17, 2018 11:35 pm

Hi everyone,
Bought a TY250C but I am a complete novice. Youtube is wonderful but looking at Tony Bou is pointless for me. Even though he is clearly gifted, he is obviously missing a self-preservation gene, or it's turned off. My personal skill level is nowhere near that and my self-preservation gene is very much turned on and so I am looking for links to helpful vids for young (even very old but new) players. For example, here is a link to one by Barry Morris which introduces the sport:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_cmL03JsMU

Here is another by Barry. I am thinking this might be a more realistic representation of the mind game that a newbie will need to take on board in order to compete safely during a competition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0LkqiGjD3U&list=PLSvk2bcQNYwrMBEjefJyx0Tyn6eNYmhMw

A look at clubman sections at a state title:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qv7t87C1QeE

And here is an English vid which show a number of novice sections from the rider's perspective:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_x3jJiqekA

A link to an NZ site on starting out: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q ... TL7r0bu9ga

I would like to recommend that the newbie come back and re-examine these videos after a little experience. I have been competing for about 9 months and it is instructive how much you can now 'see' in these videos.
Thanks,

Peter

Found a very low view site which appears to be about clubman/C grade Canadian style. These are pretty low tech, no music, no extreme editing - but they are honest. Ladies and gentlemen, I present the Ontario Vintage Trials. They produce more videos than they represent on their Youtube site. Here is a small sample:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brM7JXDJuU8

It all clubman/c class -- I think and made me think about the kind of stuff I need to work on.

Yes it's great for newcomers to see realistic action videos of lower grade riding so they know what to expect at their first trial. There are also "old-bike" specific training videos available which would be very helpful for you on your TY250C. One such video was made at a recent (a few years ago) rider training day in the UK run by Mick Andrews and it contains very useful advice for setting-up older bikes and riding techniques for older bikes. I think I bought my copy from Sammy Miller Products.
Be aware that those canadian youtube videos don't show section boundary tapes or arrows, which you will see at an actual trials competition. When you ride, you will probably find that staying within the boundaries of the section is one of the major challenges when new to trials.

I found these US items which were for training observers. I compared what was being said with Chapter 19 of MOMS and I did not spot any significant disparities but that does not mean there are none, more experienced riders might see something. Please clarify if you do.

I did notice that the gate marking seems to be different and I'm not sure about the starts, but apart from that it shows the new rider what observers are looking out for:

Please note that many grades of competition are being demonstrated on this video not only introductory. The important message here is that trials can accommodate a wide range of people and this video captures the feel of an inter-club day, which might be a simpler and less intense way for newbies to try competing for the first time.

Once again, I have to acknowledge Barry Morris. I am a subscriber and supporter of his You Tube work but I had not seen this video before.

I hope, Peter (PA), I have followed your tutorial correctly and this video plays properly. Thanks for fixing up my earlier efforts.

This is a local trial by a Victorian Club, Oakleigh MCC, at Glenmaggie. ARISE AERIAL IMAGERY provided the video which has a real sense of perspective and cinematography about it. The riders are not exclusively newbies, but there are kids riding sections, and then pros working different lines in the same sections (at least I think that is happening). I like it. The work is fresh the camera is excellent. I would recommend going full screen. My very small criticism would be it that it would be nice to hear the bikes from time to time.

Enjoy,

Peter

PS, Spoiler alert, there are some low impact crashes at about 17minutes in. Most proving, IMHO, that sometimes, shit just happens.

I ended up removing this one. It was too advanced.

Finding little, limited views videos, of club level trials competitions seems to have become a personal mission of mine. And, I have not traversed a single section yet. The following little gems are from Wales and thankfully, there is no commentary. Apologies to our Welsh expats out there. For everyone else, you know what I mean.

So, I am unsure of the gate marking and even the colours on the competitor plates. But it is interesting how the same section, sometimes constructed, puts different grades of riders through their respective paces. It goes to show: everything changes once the tape goes down.

These vids include mud!

So, you are just starting out, and, like me, you may have gone retro with an older machine. Will this take you up the grades if you are up to it? I think the answer is yes.

Enjoy, and once again, thanks to Barry Morris.
