Tacho / Hour meter

Postby kevin_zar » Tue Sep 10, 2013 10:01 pm

Here is a great little hour meter that fits easily to your trials bike.
Why have a hour meter ? To keep track of how many hours between your last oil change, airfilter change, or engine refresh.
(Ossa owners will know their ignition records the running time automatically, but it looks like being some time before all trial bikes go EFI)
The hardest part of fitting a hour meter is normally finding somewhere flat to mount it.
The solution shown here is to stick it on the ignition module, using a piece of Velcro strip. I find putting the male Velcro piece on the meter and the fuzzy female part of the Velcro on the ignition seems to work best, for those occasions when you want to take the meter off to wash the mud from parts etc.
Supplied in the packet is the pickup wire, which needs to be pushed into a slot in the back of the meter, and wrapped around the spark plug lead just a few times to pickup the engine pulse. You will need to use only part of the cable supplied, just cut off what you need.
This unit counts in tenths of an hour, so when the display says 0.5 it means the engine has been running for half an hour, 30mins.
A cool feature of this meter is the tacho feature, which displays the engine revs whenever the engine is running. When the engine is stopped, the display reverts to the total accumulated hours.
Think the idle has dropped down on the engine because the weather has changed? just look down and see you idle speed and adjust to you preference.

Things to like:
- compact, easy to fit unit, that has proven reliable and bulletproof.
- Price: retails for under $30, compared to larger units that are upwards of $60-$70.
- Available for 2 and 4 stroke engines.

Things not to like:
- the meter cannot be reset to zero, it only counts upwards.

This unit is available from TL Moto Trials in WA, Moto Central in Canberra, and other clever trial suppliers.

Best regards,
Kevin Zarczynski
