Chain lube on new chains

Postby jmclean » Mon Mar 13, 2006 3:24 pm

When I got my new Montesa I was amazed at how long the original chain lubricant lasted before I needed to start re-lubricating it.

It was white in colour, didn't clump up or make the chain really stiff when cold, and just did not throw off at all.

Does anybody have any idea of what this factory stuff is ?

Cheers, Jim

Belray also has one. All are best on a freshly cleaned chain only

What ever happened to the good old days????

I still reckon boiling a clean chain in grease and hanging it until it cools is the best ever. Maybe not for "O" Ring chains but I used to ride 70km to 100km in mud and unmentionables in my enduro days (a long time ago) between chain swaps. I got about 1000kms out of a chain on the 360 H7 and that monster eats chains not like these things we we ride!

Cooking them works for me in winter

Nothing like sitting around an old electric frypan scoffing down an ale or two in the workshop while your chain happily sizzles :P

I hear ya brother !!

I remember using a product named Duckhams chain lubricant. Came in a big round tin to lay the chain in and I'd heat it over a gas cooker. You'd ride off on an enduro, content in your mind that the chain would have lubricant for the entire day.

By the look of new chains from the factory, I wouldn't be surprised if they're using some sort of heat method to apply their lubricant as well. I doubt they're applying a propellant based solution like we get from a spray can.

I walked into Kal Daley's Shed a few weekends ago and spotted Kal and his mate crouched around something on the floor. It turned out to be a hot tin full of wax-based chain lube. So you can still get it somewhere.
