broken fork leg

Postby dirtspeeder » Wed Aug 25, 2004 5:48 pm

Hi, at a recent trial i broke the bottom off of one fork where the axle goes through, it has snapped clean off and has left a hole in the bottom of the fork and the oil has leaked out. The bike is a 86 Montesa Cota 200C and the forks are alloy. Does anyone know how to fix something like this, cheers.

Marshall Gray

ps: the bike is for sale and apart from fork is in immaculate condition (i wish to upgrade to something newer/stronger or get an xr50  )

Dear Marshall
I suggest you let a specialist aluminium alloy welder have a look at it. It is possible that it may be repairable.
If you don't know of anyone already, post your location and someone may be able to direct you to someone locally. If you don't have any success that way, send me a PM and I'll make a recommendation for someone in Brisbane who can do it if it is at all possible.
I have seen trickier jobs weld repaired than the one you describe.

Another option is to keep an eye out for anyone wrecking a bike with the same forks. Cota fork legs were often shared between Montesa Cota models. It would be useful for you to identify which other Montesas had the same fork legs in your search. Have a look at some of the excellent Montesa websites and you should be able to work it out.
