i think i want to paint my wheels!

Postby wazzawood » Tue Dec 28, 2004 6:45 pm

gday

ive noticed a few bikes here and abroard with anodised rims, and even fewer with painted (black) rims.

Has anyone here done it?

wheels get scratched a bit, so i guess a nice smooth job cant last very long.

painted the middle muffler matt black and it looks schmick, the 02 gassers had a dull looking steel one.
just feeling colourful.

Hi Wazza

The trick to painting alloy is to use an etch primer. The best are usually a 2 pack marine type. Be warned, once painted with an etch primer there is no going back. If you choose not to prime the paint will flake off everytime you use a pressure wash and even the sun could make it blister depending on the paint used. If you go ahead with the idea use a high quality 2 pack automotive paint. This will be hard enough to take a fair amount of scratches etc. Stick with solid colors rather than metallic cause its easy to touch up.

Hope that helps.

Thanks BJ, I've taken advice from yet another Sherco patriot (thanks Moto Central) - and will mask the outside of the rim (the only bit that gets scratched!) so only the centre of the rim is painted. Thanks for the advice on the 2 pak paint and automotive etch primer.... good ol me would probably have brushed on some fence paint!

I've got some gear left over from the datsun respray, including hardener. Should i add the hardener, or just drink more milk?

Thanks, Wazza

PS Started to mask the spokes, gave up and went trials riding.

............masking the spokes????..........Brushes........

I thought you would just dip the whole wheel in a tub of paint the quickly put it back in and spin dry!!!!! If you use black paint you can even leave the tyre on!!!!

Use the hardener, it makes the paint tougher and more resistant to oil and fuel.

ps just finished 2hrs of riding,

Thanks again BJ,

Will start soon, i like the dipping idea - thats how i wash it after a ride.

So thats what hardener does.... I thought if I drank enough of it I could go ride experts!

happy new year

Wazza

I've drunk it, rubbed it on (rocks) and guess what?????

I still close my eyes at C grade lines!

My voice didn't get deeper!

And Cabestany is still my idol (if I could only bounce).

Have a good New Year....what ever color you paint it!

Paint does look tatty quick. You would be best to get the rims anodised. Even if they get some scratches they don't look so bad because it is a lighter colouring... and when you wash the bike it will not allow the pressure to try and peel it off.
