Yamaha TY250A Fork Tube, inner 2 off

Postby PeterLecompte » Fri Sep 27, 2019 7:49 pm

Hi TY250 twinshock enthusiasts,
Trying to finish off my TY250A project. I am looking for a set of fork tubes, inner. The set I had were unable to be repaired. Good condition or as long as they can be made serviceable by RAD hard chroming. I live in the South Burnett, but can pick up in within a couple hours drive or I will pay postage.

Cheers and Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter,

Just letting you know that I have several pairs that are rusty. Also I have a lathe so I can turn them to see if they are straight. The bit I don't know is how good they need to be for Rad Chrome to replace them?

Regards

Greg

Hi Greg, thanks. Sounds okay, depending on the depth of the rust. Deep pitting maybe a problem but they are pretty good. They grind off the old chrome etc. and then re-chrome. If you are okay to post, I am okay tp pay and take them to Brisbane to visit the shop and see if they are usable?

Cheers
Peter

Hi Greg,
I went to RAD hard chroming and asked them about the degree of rust/corrosion and pitting they could deal with and repair. Where the existing chrome has been compromised- that is okay, but, if there is deep pitting - we are talking about greater than about 0.3mm they will decide when they start working on it. Sorry I can not be more exact. The attached photo shows one that is okay and the other (cut at top) would no5 due to pitting. What condition are your tubes? Cheers Peter

Wow that that is pretty bad rust Peter. Do you know you can buy new tubes for TY250 for about the same cost as the rechroming cost? A bloke up here just bought two new sets.
The supplier is called Forking by Frank and is in the USA

Hi Peter,

OK, so what you are saying makes sense. Attached are some photos of the tubes that I have spare, I have linished the legs and they spin true, so not bent. They are 34 mm as you know and I can only measure with verniers and I cant find anywhere that actually measures less than 34 mm. Rad chrome will have an accurate depth guage or they will know after doing the first plating? Another thing to consider is the internal bore not being pitted and these were oily coming apart. These have caps that are not butchered but need a good clean.

What David has suggested makes sense if the quality is there?

Totally your call, $80.00 including post if you want these?

Hi David,
Thanks for the contact about Franks Forks. BJracing also sell them. I am sure that they are suitable. But, at the current exchange rate and postage, a good used set from Australia, that I can get re- chromed in Brissie sits better with me. Cheers Peter
