DOT Trials in Oz

Postby gongon » Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:48 am

Hi

Just joined the forum.

My wife & I have just been granted visas to emigrate from UK to WA to join our daughters & grand children in the next year or so.

I have several bikes including a Suzuki Beamish 250 & a DOT 197 Trials (1959)

I probably won't be bringing the Beamish but the DOT is special to me. If I do bring it with me, what clubs are there in or around Perth Metro and would I get to use it regularly in trials?

I've ridden it a bit over the years (including as an observer for the Scottish pre-65 trials)

I am an engineer and make most bits for the bike but was wondering what the availability of Villiers bits is in Oz?

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom
Like you, I came to Oz from the UK in 1979 and was a rider in moto cross and trials in the Midland centre
I have been riding a selection of bikes in Aus trials for a number of years and after a hip replacement now slowing down a bit with a Fantic 305 and a Villiers engined Bantam to ride in Classic which I have just bought.

I used to have a Beamish in the UK and my dad won the Villiers trophy on a DOT in 1952 so I can relate to those bikes,,, nice.
Pity you are not coming to Qld where we have a healthy twinshock and Classic group of entries in most open events
If you would like to keep in touch my private email address is twinshock@aapt.net.au.

Good luck, when do you arrive, I'm sure some of the guys in WA will quickly look after you
Cheers

Welcome gongon,
Bring both bikes please, you would make most use of the Beamish really, as the trials set in WA are a little unforgiving for twinshock class, but quite capable for Club Class.
Also the Beamish and the DOT will be one of a kinds over here too.

I tried to raise the profile of Twinshocks about over a season ago, but struggled to maintain support of other riders. We do have 2x clubs over here in the west and a number of series and events with wide variety. Let me know if you need contact with any of them.

You probably wont see me around at a trial, as work and study is keeping me far too busy for a while, but I can usually be found on the board most times.

Cheers,
Roger :WA:

I would rather push my twinshock than ride a modern!

Thanks for the replies.

Over here in England, the DOT is classed as a "historic vehicle" and exempt from our road tax. It is only insured when I do my annual trip to the Scottish pre-65 (as an observer) (Gets there on the trailer and only actually covers about 3 miles on the road with 30 or so per day up in the hills)

The Beamish isn't old enough to be exempt. It has never been registered (although I have a dating certificate) and has never been used on the road but I have ridden it at many trials over the last 6 years.

If I bring the bikes, do I have to register, insure, tax, licence them (or "rego" whatever, don't really know what I'm talking about) although they will never be used on the highway.

Thanks for your help

Tom

Hi Tom,
They don't have to be registered or insured if you are not using them on the road. All the best with your move, and hope you enjoy Australia as much as we have.

Hi Cedric

Thanks for that, guess I can build up my collection again, but this time in Oz.

I will be taking the DOT (maybe the Beamish) and I also have road bike, Honda CX500 in a thousand bits which belonged to my late brother in law (so I'm duty bound to hang onto it - don't have a problem with that, he was a great guy) - maybe turn that into a morgan style trike.

I get most pleasure out of maintaining & rebuilding my bikes, I have a lathe in the UK but it's a monster (800 kg) which won't be going to Oz. I'll likely buy a Myford and bring that with me. I get the impression that it would be a great asset in keeping my bikes on the road. Spoiled in the UK with specialist make dealers everywhere for old bikes.

My riding ability earned me the nickname of "tumbling Tom" some years go (Im now the wrong side of 60) and it stuck! I am still a mediocre rider but I do enjoy the riding so what the heck. Don't mind finishing last, great just to finish.

Really looking forward to getting to Oz!

Regards

Tom

There you have blown the only chance of escaping being called "Tumbling Tom" for the rest of your life. :D

Hey Tom,
I'm an expat pom in Perth and I have to say that if your Beamish is yellow you have to bring it. I'm sure I can persuade you to sell it to me for 50 quid! I had a lovely 81 250 back in Blighty, I just loved that bike, I tried a 325 but ended up buying my old 250 back... I'd love to see one out here.
I've just finished a TY175 restoration and am planning to ride it in the coming season.
Good luck with the move, it's a big step I know but if you think you'll miss your trials you probably will, however it will be replaced by a spectacular change in terms of terrain and conditions. I rode her for a couple of years in the late 90's and often had to stop on the loop to take in the beauty of the countryside. Unfortunately divorce blocked off that particular avenue of pleasure but I'm just about over all that and ready to go again!

Regards

Mark - WA
