Bultaco reunion at Conondale 2011

Postby David Lahey » Tue Aug 09, 2011 10:21 pm

A few of us are planning to bring along our old Bultacos to Conondale in November - in particular our M49 Sherpa Ts.
We hope to have examples on display of the three variants of the M49 that were produced through the long production run of M49s (from 1968 to 1971). So far there are four M49s expected to be there.
Here are three of those bikes:

Eagle-eyed Bultaco nuts shoule be able to see the the differences between the three variants shown here.

1st pic has series 3 full cradle frame
3rd pic (series 2?) laid forward shocks

This is good motivation to bring mine (not M49 though)
C'mon guys - get them out and about

Here is another Bultaco planning to join the reunion at Conondale this year. This one is Cedric van Heerden's 250 Sherpa T.
It came as a bit of a shock for me when Cedric acquired this bike. For the last 16 years I have only ever seen him fixing and riding Montesas and Yamahas

Thanks brownie it was great to read that magazine article. I noticed that the M49 in the cover photo is a different bike to the one that the kid is riding in the article. It was the two different types of chain tensioner that gave it away.
The one on the cover photo has the same bar clamps as Greg's M49. Mine are different to those, and look to be a later design.
Another funny thing is that they also put a photo of the same kid riding a Lobito in the article - a bit confusing!

I've been doing a bit of work on my M49 lately. The barrell I'm putting on has a few nests to clean out of the fins. One side mostly has the common mud-wasp variety and the other has nests that smell like eucalyptus leaves and look like two-pack foam. Never seen anything like them before but I guess they are some sort of wasp nest - and soon to be gone

I suspect the M49 motor has not had the sidecovers polished since new (43 years) so it took a bit of elbow grease to clean up the corrosion to the point it could be polished. Trouble with making the surface shiny is that it shows up the dents, cracks and gouges. One cover is as pretty as I intend making it. The other is yet to be worked on.
