Hi All
My name is Eric and I have had this TY 175 JE for 15 years and I found it in a box at the wreckers. It had thrown a chain and took a chip out of the casing of the selector drum. Everything was dismantled ready for sale. I bought the lot for $400 and fixed the case and put it back together with what I thought was restoring it. Although I’m reasonably happy with how its come together I do regret not just cleaning it and putting it back together as it was in reasonably good condition and full of character which I have now wiped
The bike was missing all its JEness and I have tried to reconstruct the missing parts with what I thought was the right bits. A turns out some of what I thought was wrong. The tail light and bracket are not for this bike. I bought a genuine tail light lens of eBay which would not fit as the reflectors would be in the way if I had the proper tail light backing plate to go with it. I don’t know why but 15 years ago I through the steel under tray that goes under the mudguard away as at the time I thought it was useless rusty rubbish??? Now of course I would very much like the under tray to support the taillight. If you know of a tail light assembly or under tray for sale please let me know.
I did not have a left switch block so got a black one that looked about right, paint striped it polished it, rewired and soldered the internals to match the pins in the headlight and used grey shrink wrap to simulate the original grey wire casings. I suspect the original ones only have one wire coming out where this one has two? If you know of one for sale regardless of condition I would be happy to clean it up.
I’m missing the battery box which is causing a lot of problems as I keep blowing globes. I think I need the battery box to regulate the power. I have taken this bike on our local Christmas toy run for the salvos a couple of times. It costs about $50 for a one day registration but by the time I get home just about every globe is blown. If some one has a battery box they want sell regardless of condition I would be very appreciative. Failing that if I could borrow one for about 3 months I could take it to a sheet metal works or have a go at reproducing one myself.
There are a few other bits and pieced I need but this has taken me 15 years so far I will get around to the rest latter. My daughter has put dibs on this bike so I want to get it right in the end.
Finally what is this? One on each side.
Thank you
Eric

Re: My long time friend the pransing horse
Those things are alternate footpeg mounts. The splines allow them to be adjusted for position.
While the TY175 was being designed, there was a kit available for the TY250A that made it more comfortable for trail riding. There was a bigger seat, forward-mounted footpegs, and longer brake and shift pedals to suit the forward mounted pegs. Yamaha considered making a similar kit for the TY175, but did not, probably because the TY250 kit was not popular.
The first TY175 (TY175B) frame design incorporated those footpeg mount splines and (probably for cost-of-manufacture reasons) all sunsequent TY175 frames were made with the same lower frame section design.
Spline-mounted adjustable footpegs were standard on the smaller Yamaha dirt bikes of the early 1970s.

Re: My long time friend the pransing horse
Ok this time I'm on the forum from safari still on the ipad
Photo yum dissent resize. Pastime I did this in basket cash it failed and I used the free version of tapatalk. Now I have the $5.00 version tha may be working in the background?
Ok try a second photo
Ok I could not do that before it said to big. I'm not resizing them now
Screen shot of normal forum placed in line no resizing. Ok screen shot to big
Death road
Photos all over the place can't control where to put them. Seems to be auto sizing at medium 640 x
This bit is done in edit
Edit again I did not put that photo between both edits. Can't seem to be able to control the photos.
Late now by progress made

Re: My long time friend the pransing horse
Ok on this forum vis tapatalk to safari so I presume all. It's benefits will be. There Now to and try and stick mutable photos
iPad photo so it's going to be big. Just pressed place in line did not ask to resize or say to big
Next ipad photo this time I made a file comment. To big
Camera photo down loaded to ipad, file comment, salt hotel, no resize needed, place inline, appears above the first photo posted attachments
Camera photo, moon same process as last one
One more to check order stick
Ipad photo, to big have to find a way to resize these if the others work
Edit 3: can now! Where I want, size I want.
Edit 4: yes, that did not go as planed. Should have looked like the last photo?
Edit 1: photos stay in place but are big and need scrolling and not nice like I see others do. Next trick is to resize ipad photos
Edit 2: just learned if I tap the photos that need scrolling once with my finger they go full size. I guess it's like kicking on them with a mouse? Will look at them at work and see if it works with micro soft.

Re: My long time friend the pransing horse
Possible that the last photo gets the border and is sized and looks how I want them.
Size 900, that's why I like simple 2 strokes you could play with this and get 30 hp easy.
You can't say it's been mothered. This is the result of 15 or more years of restoring. Size 900.
Edit : ok that's odd, I got my look and feel for both photos. Must be something about placing in a past post. May have to look at that.
Edit : just went and fixed up my original post that caused me to work out how this new ipad and forums work. I edited the post and striped out every photo and replaced them with size 900 photos. Worked a treat.
Board index < twin shock and classic < basket case < page 27
