:o Sybella, Thanks for throwing some info at me about parts for the TLR250R-G model.I have typed in motor designation(MD18E), have also tried to get Japanese web sites and I have come across a parts book that has TLR250RG on the cover. Price, not worried but it might be of assistance. It seems as what I have read about these that 1 year only they were built. So, I am thinking what would they have based the engine on , or complete new design. The spark plug is on left side of head and XLs, XRs 200 & 250 were right side and went to 4 valve heads RFVC , this is 2 valve.. Look, the bike does not use or burn oil, has heaps of compression, but you never know what might be.I drowned my 2 month old 1998 XR 400 one beautiful winters day in Hunter Valley, and had the gaskets, rings, valve stem seals and parts to rebuild in a few days. So as I am a bit anal, if I had neccesary gaskets etc , even if I dont use them I reckon It would just give me a bit of piece of mind, that yes I can rebuild that ready for a weekend of mucking around, jumping logs , climbing creeks and hills and chasing cattle.
Thanks everyone, if anything pops into your mind, put on hear. Check 2 to 3 times a week.

I thought the TLR 250 was a different bore to the TLR 250 R ?

Oooh-err Eagle, I'd better check the bore. I didn't know there were TLR250 models with 2 different bores, -that's a trap eh?
Thanks for the heads-up. I'm trying to get a piston (that is not insanely expensive) for my mate Jacko, who has done a great job bringing an incomplete box of bits back to life as a very presentable TLR250 (It's the earlier, first red white and blue TLR250). Only hitch is that he hasn't been able to find a piston for it, -it's presently running some 'other' piston, but the comp ratio is way too high, even though he's attacked the piston with a grinder -he ain't game to grind any more off it!
Bore: TLR250 ? TLR250 R ? Anyone know?

Now I'm REALLY confused!!!
What's this "RS250"?
I thought we were talking TLRs ?
Jacko needs piston for 70mm bore (which I assume is ALL TLRs including the TLR250R that Tony MAY have for sale.

I believe the TLR250R is unique, not the same design as TLR250F, Rtl250 or XR250 it appears to be made and sold mainly to the Japanese market.
Note where the kick start shaft is up high and the cam chain is on the RH side

Hi Jools, not to hijack the thread but has your mate tried an extra base gasket or a spacer between the crankcase and the cylinder?

No hijack mate, good to get your input.
No he hasn't tried a compression plate (yet?) he's hoping for a piston.
I might be overthinking it, but it would need quite a thick plate to reduce compression to what he needs, (guessing at this stage perhaps 1.5 to 2 'atmospheres' lower) and I wonder how that might affect the camchain and camchain tensioner setup. Obviously not such a problem with a pushrod motor (apart from pushrod angles), but OHC may be different. Looks like compression ratio needs to be 8.5:1 max, at the mo' It feels like it's at least 10:1 kicking it over.
(The last time I went through all this was on a '59 BSA Super Rocket!!!)
