Need a cheap lanyard kill switch and spare button for the Greeves.
Anyone point me in the right direction please.

The cheap ones that use friction for the lanyard plug are on eBay and have a stop button incorporated. I'm not recommending them though. There's a good reason the good ones use a magnetic switch

If you want to risk an unwanted engine stop, do as I did and buy one. It work ok for me until I use the lanyard than it was unreliable.

The best advice I can give you is buy a magnetic type from places like the hell team or your local bike shop may have one.
There are 2 types of kill switch though, 1 will allow your engine to run while unplugged and not when plugged in - guess how I found that out?
The magnetic kill switch is cheaper than the friction ones. Because like many of us, after you get the s***s with it unplugging on its own... you buy the magnetic type.

My old style Kill switch on the Greeves puts it to earth when pressed.
Is this how the magnetic ones works, can use existing wire,
or will I have to change things.

Both types of magnetic lanyard killswitch (normally open and normally closed) are available. For your application you would use normally open which means the switch is open when the magnet is in position.
The new one will have two wires. One goes to your existing killswitch wire. The other goes to the bike frame or whatever earthing point you want to use.
Your old killswitch may be earthed through the clamp that holds it to the bars. The new magnetic ones are insulated from the bars. They run an earth wire on the new ones because if you earth a killswitch through the bars, the sparking at the steering bearings can cause damage.

Also if you are buying a Magnetic Lanyard type buy a good one.
The Leonelli ones are by far the most popular and good quality. You can also buy spare buttons and lanyards for them.
There is now a few "chinese copies" starting to emerge, but as you may find out the polarity of the magnet is not always the same. So you may need a spare button at some stage, ........you get a Leonelli one (because the copies only come as complete units) but you will find the magnets repel instead of attracting. The old "you get what you pay for" in play one more time!
We have sold a lot of the Leonelli ones and the had very very few issues, and they can be "serviced". The housing will pry apart and the internal connections can be cleaned, then re-assembled.

If you got a lot of bikes and want a cheap Magnetic switch and you got time to muck about you can make one.
I use a window reed switch with a small rare earth magnet.
Link to switch on ebay is attached. They are wired for both NO and NC.
Ebay also has the small rare earth magnets.
I have made three of these and they are on my TY's and they work a treat.
If your interested I can post a picture of the final product later as camera battery is low now.

There are that many trials competitions around Australia. Trials clubs etc surely there is a recognized standard. This is what we require for you to compete. You require a tethered kill switch that is up to our standards. I would have expected most trials riders use the same one. I wouldn't of thought options for which one to buy were available. This is what we want & I would of thought 90% of riders would use the same one ?
