2019 Trial des Nations - Lillie Yiatrou Interview

24th Jun, 2019 | Kyle Middleton

This week we're getting an insight into our youngest team member, Lillie. I have to say I only started taking notice of Lillie since I happened to be riding close to her for a lot of the Australian Titles last year.  I was impressed with her riding!  We've had a couple of practice days together since & she's improved a lot just in that short time. Let's get into it.

Tell me a bit about Lillie.

I am 15 years old, originally from Manchester UK but currently live in Adelaide, South Australia. I learnt to ride a motorbike before a pushbike when I was about 5 and have been riding ever since.

How much training do you do?

I try to ride every night for around an hour followed by the gym for about an hour as well. I've recently been focusing more on techniques on the bike and perfecting the ones I already know as well as learning new ones.

What got you into Trials?

My Dad and Brother both rode trials so I was always around it. I had 2 choices, wear a dress and go shopping with mum or throw on a helmet and go riding with dad. Dresses were never my thing.

You've never ridden the TdN before, what are you expecting and what do you think of being in a team environment?

I am really looking forward to the TdN, I don't really know what to expect but I'm looking forward to riding with Jenna and being part of Team Australia. I think it will be a really great experience for me.

It must be a little daunting being in a sport where the majority are men but I'm sure that it's just as much fun for girls as it is for boys.  So what would you say to other young girls who are thinking about getting into trials?

Definately give it a go. Don't let the boys put you off. Everyone in the Trials community are so welcoming and there is always someone there to help if you need it. Just focus on your ride and don't worry about what anyone else is doing. There is plenty of opportunities out there for girls and you just have to be committed & enjoy it!

Awesome Lillie, keep up the hard work & I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience and do us all proud with our riding.
