Denman 2013 NSW Classic and Post Classic Moto Trials Championship
On Sunday 21st of July Denman Motorcycle Club held the second NSW twinshock championships. The event was contested at a different venue this year, Mal & Sharon Chapmans property at Giants Creek [Sandy Hollow] The event attracted nearly fifty riders from a number of states including NSW, Queensland, Victoria and the ACT. There was a wide range of machinery present with TY Yamaha’s being the most popular, followed by the TLR Honda’s. Also competing were Bultaco’s, Triumph’s, with Montesa, Suzuki, BSA, Italjet and Kawasaki, being represented as well.
Mal and the Denman club members spent considerable time clearing out areas for the sections in an effort to test the riders. Seven sections were set to be ridden seven times during the day. Looking at the sections on Saturday very few people would have predicted the low scores that were required to win each grade on the Sunday.
In A grade Boyd Willcocks from Queensland, on a borrowed TLR 250, had a day long battle with Jake Walker from Wollongong, on a TY175, both finishing the day on one point lost each. Boyd has extensive experience having ridden overseas on a number of occasions, including the Scottish Six Days Trial and is a member of Australia’s Trial Des Nations team. Toby Coleman, Australian Twinshock Champion, was not far off the pace with five points lost. Fantastic riding from all three. Steve Johnson, a former Australian Champion, finished a great fourth on his Bultaco 325 losing just twenty points whilst giving away quite a few years to the younger riders. The tie for first place necessitated a ride off at the completion of the event to determine the winner.
The riders attempted the first section and to the delight of the crowd after three attempts they were still tied on zero points. The section was reversed but after three attempts still no result. A second section was then put into use and you guessed it after three attempts no result. So the section was reversed and finally Jake made a mistake and fived the section handing the title to Boyd. I think most would have been happy to see the title shared between the two such was the level of riding and the camaraderie displayed between these two young men. Anyway congratulations must go to Boyd on such a fantastic display of riding. It was also interesting to see former multiple Australian Champ Peter Paice in the crowd as well.
The Classic pre65 class was won by Tony Bax on a count back from fellow Queensland rider Jordan Gollaeher on five points each, with Tony having the most cleans. Dan Gollaeher came third on eleven. There were only four entries in this class unfortunately making it the smallest class at the event.
B grade was won by the ‘middle man’ Gary Boniface, on a TLR, going clean the whole day. This was just the start of a pretty good day for team Boniface. Second was Greg Nordsvan, 325 Bultaco, on eleven points. Not to far away in third on twenty four points was new mum Michelle Coleman. Great to see her riding again, and so soon after the new arrival. Michelle just pipped Jarad Boniface for third place after they tied on twenty four points with Michelle having the most cleans. Interestingly Jarad was in a comfortable second place after 3 laps.
C grade was won by another Queenslander Rowan Gibson on zero points. Maurice Blanchard was second on four points. Joe Henderson was third on five points. I guess the worrying thing about Joe is just when you think he has no more ‘costumes’ to grace us with out comes the Golden Suit.
Clubman was won by the oldest member of ‘Team Boniface’ young Les on two points. Another fantastic effort from a one of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet. Nathan Guiness on an Italjet came second on three points. While Denman club member Sarah Grist has a great ride to come third on five points.
Junior was won by the youngest ‘Team Boniface’ member Bailey on zero points edging out Marcus Velarde on one point, with Josh King coming in on three points to wrap up third position.
Gas Gas rider Kyle Middleton, fresh from his World Championship campaign, put on an impressive display during the event. A host of spectators gathered to watch and marvel at what can be done on the latest model Gas Gas.
It is essential that this event continues as a stand alone state championship as the numbers each year continue to grow. A large number of the competitors at this event have and compete on late model mono bikes. If the twinshock championship is incorporated in to the larger ‘mono’ state championship then many of the riders will opt to ride their newer bike leaving the twinshock class depleted of entries. Also a special mention should go out to the members of the Denman Club that gave up their ride in the event, to either mark sections or assist with the organization, because without them the event wouldn’t run.
